THE MUSIC OF SAN FERNANDO
San Fernando Cathedral has served as a major liturgical force in preserving and enhancing the Hispanic liturgical and popular devotional traditions of the people of the Southwestern part of the United States and Mexico.
Over 150 instrumentalists and singers make up the diverse groups of San Fernando's choirs, which include the following: "San Fernando's Mariachi Choir" - includes trumpets, guitars, and guitarron (Spanish, bilingual music; 30 members) "Los Inocentes" - guitar quartet (Spanish, bilingual music; 4 members) "Classical Choir" - sings traditional English, Spanish, and Latin hymns (English, Spanish, bilingual, Latin music; 25 members) "El Coro Popular" - directed by Carlos Rosas (Spanish, bilingual music; 40 members) "Contemporary Youth Choir" - uses music from "Spirit and Song" (English, bilingual music; 15 teenage/young adult members) "Coro Providencia" - mixture of adult voices with three young guitarists who specialize in comtemporary bilingual hymns (Spanish, English, bilingual music; 7 members) "San Fernando Singers" - octet that sings once a month for the televised Mass and for special seasonal liturgies "Vocalistas y Instrumentalistas Los Ninos de San Patricio" - group of children who are learning to sing and play guitars donated by Archbishop Patrick Flores' guitar program (Spanish; 15 children) "Los Ninos de la Candelaria" - children's choir named after one of the Cathedral's patron saints (Spanish, English; 20 members)
